School age children do receive nutritious free or reduced price breakfasts and lunches when they are in school.   But the problem is most severe the days that school is not in session. We want to help bridge the gap by providing nutritious foods that do not require adult preparation directly to the children for the weekends and school breaks. This will be done by providing easy to carry bags of food every Friday afternoon, distributed by the schools as the children prepare to go home for the weekend. Eventually, we intend to expand the program to include summer time, as well. It puts the food directly in the hands of the child, requires no overhead, and no taxpayer dollars. Food is purchased wholesale at the best possible pricing.

The Original "Backpack" Program

In 1995, a school nurse in Little Rock, Arkansas contacted the local food bank seeking help for children in her school who were suffering from hunger.  In response to her concerns, the local food bank started the Food for Kids program and provided hungry students in that school with groceries in non-descript backpacks.  And the very first backpack program in the nation was established.

All it took was one person who cared enough to make a phone call.
